with topics of interest to Italian language enthusiasts. The first half is in Italian
followed by the English translation. We hope this helps you with your Italian language
learning.
Here in New Hampshire the flowers are blooming and spring seems to be upon us. As warm
weather approaches, traveling has been on our minds, and so we have chosen travel tips as
the topic for this newsletter. Included below are hints on when to travel to Italy and
what to bring, as well as possible events to add to your itinerary, from music events to
sports action to local happenings.

L'estate sta arrivando rapidamente, e con l'arrivo del bel tempo inizio a pensare alle
ferie e al viaggiare. In Italia la maggior parte della gente va in ferie durante agosto,
quando chiudono parecchie fabbriche e aziende. Gli stranieri che viaggiano in Italia in
questo periodo corrono il rischio di trovare le città semivuote ed alcuni negozi chiusi.
In compenso però in città ci sono meno folle e si può viaggiare con tranquillità.
Invece ai viaggiatori che preferiscono incontrarsi con italiani e che vogliono visitare il
paese quando prosegue la vita cosiddetta "normale", consiglio di andare nei mesi
di giugno, luglio, o settembre.
Un'ultima cosa da tenere in mente quando si progetta un viaggio in Italia è che
d'estate fa molto caldo in quasi tutta la penisola. Non è insolito arrivare ai 90 o 100
gradi Fahrenheit. È quindi consigliabile portare vestiti leggeri, almeno un costume da
bagno, e un cappello per proteggersi dal sole. Oltre questo bisogna portare il senso
dell'umorismo, la conoscenza dell'italiano, e una voglia di conoscere un'altra cultura!
"Vacanza" vuol dire cose diverse per persone diverse. C'è chi ama la
spiaggia, chi ama la montagna, chi vuole essere sempre impegnato, e chi vuole riposarsi e
basta. Sotto sono elencate alcune possibilità per come passare il tempo viaggiando in
Italia. Spero che queste idee possano contribuire ad una vacanza felice per chi vada in
Italia quest'estate.
MUSICA
Gli amanti dell'opera troveranno interessante il Festival dell'Opera di Rossini che si
svolge dal 7 al 22 agosto a Pesaro (nella regione delle Marche). Quest'anno ci saranno gli

All'Arena di Verona, uno dei teatri più famosi in Italia, ci saranno i seguenti

Per chi preferisce la musica rock, ci sono parecchi gruppi-per la maggior parte
americani-che girano l'Europa quest'estate. A Roma, per esempio, ci sarà Alanis Morisette
il 22 giugno, e i Backstreet Boys il 29 giugno. Allo Stadio Dallara di Bologna, suoneranno
i R.E.M. l'11 luglio. E a Napoli si potrà vedere Aerosmith il 12 luglio.
Infine, ci sono due festival di musica che meritano di essere menzionati. Il primo è
l'Umbria Jazz Festival a Perugia dal 9 luglio al 18 luglio, dove si festeggerà la musica
e gli artisti jazz. Poi c'è il famoso Festival di Spoleto che si svolge ovviamente a
Spoleto (nella regione di Umbria), tra il 19 giugno e l'11 luglio. A questo festival
internazionale non mancheranno la musica, il ballo, il teatro, e il divertimento.
SPORT
Uno degli eventi sportivi più importanti e conosciuti in Italia è il Palio di Siena,
un'antica corsa di cavalli che si svolge ogni anno a Siena il 2 luglio e il 16 agosto. È
gratis per il pubblico, e partecipare agli eventi di queste giornate di festività è un
modo indimenticabile di imparare qualcosa sulla cultura italiana.

Chi ama correre non vorrà perdere la maratona del Piceno il 12 settembre a
Grottazzolina (nella provincia di Ascoli-Piceno). C'è da divertirsi sia se si guarda sia

SAGRE
Un fenomeno culturale molto importante in Italia è la sagra. Una sagra è simile ad un
festival, e spesso è sponsorizzato da una parrocchia, un partito politico, oppure un
comune. Di solito la sagra è un posto per incontrare altre persone, per assaggiare cibi
locali, e per vedere balli o concerti tipici. Frequentando una sagra durante un viaggio in
Italia può essere un modo interessante per conoscere meglio i costumi locali e la cultura
italiana in generale.
Tante volte una sagra ha un tema specifico che festeggia una ricorrenza particolare.
Per esempio, a Sessame c'è la Sagra del Risotto dove si mangia riso. A Marino, la prima
domenica di ottobre, si svolge la Sagra dell'Uva per festeggiare la raccolta dell'uva e la
produzione del vino. E ad Asciano nella prima domenica di giugno c'è la Sagra della
Ranocchia, dove si preparano cibi a base di rane. In quasi tutte le città o i comuni si
svolgono sagre di diversi tipi principalmente durante l'estate; basta chiedere all'Ufficio
Informazione locale, o leggere i manifesti appesi per le strade.

Summer is quickly arriving, and with the onset of good weather I have started to think
about vacations and traveling. In Italy most people go on vacation in August, when many
factories and companies are closed. Foreigners who travel in Italy during this month run
the risk of finding half-empty cities and some closed stores. On the other hand, there
will be fewer crowds in town and one can travel without a lot of hassles. For travelers
who, in contrast, prefer to meet Italians and who would like to visit the country at a
time when so called "normal" life prevails, I advise you to go during the months
of June, July, or September.
One last thing to keep in mind when planning a trip to Italy is that it can be very hot
in the summer along the entire peninsula. It is not unusual to have 90 or 100 degree
temperatures. It is therefore advisable to bring lightweight clothing, at least one
bathing suit, and a hat to protect yourself from the sun. Beyond that, you should just
bring your sense of humor, knowledge of Italian, and a desire to get to know another
culture!
"Vacation" means different things for different people. Some like the beach,
others like the mountains, some like to stay busy, others prefer to just rest. Below are
listed a few possibilities for how to pass your time traveling through Italy. I hope that
these ideas can contribute to a happy vacation for travelers to Italy this summer.
MUSIC
Opera lovers may be interested in the Rossini Opera Festival, which takes place from
August 7th to the 22nd in Pesaro (in the Marches region). This year there will be the

Finally, there are two music festivals that deserve mention. The first is the Umbria

celebrated. Then there is the famous Spoleto Festival that takes place, obviously, in
Spoleto (also in the Umbria region), between June 19th and July 11th. This international
festival will no doubt include music, dance, theater, and fun.
SPORTS
One of the most important and well known sports events in Italy is the Palio of Siena,
the ancient horse race that takes place every year in Siena on July 2nd and August 16th.
It is free to the public, and participating in the events of these days of festivities is
an unforgettable way to learn something about Italian culture.

Those who love running won't want to miss the Piceno Marathon on September 12 in

SAGRAS
The sagra is a very important cultural phenomenon in Italy. A sagra is similar to a
festival, and often is sponsored by a parish, a political party, or the town government.
Generally a sagra is a place to meet with people, to taste local dishes, and to see
customary dances or concerts. Attending a sagra during a trip to Italy can be an
interesting way to better understand local customs and Italian culture in general.
Often a sagra has a specific theme that celebrates a particular occurrence. For
example, in Sessame there is the Risotto Sagra where people eat rice. In Marino, on the
first Sunday in October, the Grape Sagra takes place to celebrate the grape harvest as
well as wine production. And in Asciano, on the first Sunday in June, there is the Frog
Sagra, where foods made from frogs are prepared. In almost all cities and towns, different
kinds of sagras take place during the summer; just ask at the local Tourist Board or read
the posters hung along the streets.
