Italian Articles Dear Language Enthusiast,

Greetings from Transparent Language! Every so often we send out this free newsletter with topics of interest to Italian language enthusiasts. Since the introduction of the newsletter last year, we have received dozens of letters from readers with positive feedback and suggestions. We are delighted that the newsletter has been so well received, and are grateful for your insightful comments.

Of all the suggestions readers have sent, perhaps the most common one is to offer our newsletter in both English and Italian. So, in response to your feedback, from this issue on we are proud to offer newsletters in both languages. We have first presented the following newsletter in Italian, followed immediately by the English version. This will be a good tool for practicing your Italian skills.

The topic of this month's newsletter is current events. Included below are reports on Italian sailor, Giovanni Soldini, updates on the Academy Awards, the Festival of Sanremo and more.

Sincerely,
Transparent Language

Testate Giornalistiche dall'Italia

Italian Newspaper Headlines
The Italian sailor, Giovanni Soldini, interrupted his voyage around the world in the Around Alone race in order to save his friend Isabelle Autissier. Autissier's boat had capsized, leaving the French woman at the mercy of the waves for 24 hours before her friend and competitor arrived to save her. The Greek Consulate in Milan and the UN Headquarters in Rome were among the many government offices in Europe to be temporarily occupied by Kurds protesting the February 15th arrest of their leader, Abdullah Ocalan. During these demonstrations in Italy, there were no injuries or violence. The wars in Albania and Kosovo have provoked a wave of new immigrants-- often clandestine--in Italy. Massimo D'Alema's government has declared a sanatorium on the immigration law, giving at least 250 thousand immigrants in Italy the possibility of obtaining a visa.

The Arts
A few weeks ago when the Academy Award nominations were announced, an Italian film received international recognition. Life Is Beautiful, directed by Roberto Benigni, received seven Oscar nominations in all, including those for best foreign film and best film overall. The movie recounts the story of an Italian family during fascism and World War II. Benigni, the protagonist, plays the Jewish husband of a Catholic woman, played by Nicoletta Braschi. They are captured by the Nazis and taken to a concentration camp with their four-year-old son. The film, realistic and touching, portrays the reality of the Holocaust from a different point of view than the average war movie.

Culture
February is a month full of cultural events along the whole Italian peninsula. Two traditions in particular deserve mention. One, the Festival of Sanremo, is a relatively recent tradition, while the other, the celebration of Carnival, is an age-old tradition. Sanremo is the largest music competition that takes place in Italy each year. Talented musicians and singers often emerge out of Sanremo, and their careers can take off after a successful year at the Festival. The event lasts five evenings, all of which are broadcast for a national television audience. This year the Festival will take place between the 23rd and 27th of February, and along with many new faces, several Italian music stars are expected, such as Gianni Morandi, Riccardo Cocciante, Franco Battiato, and Ivano Fossati. Carnival is celebrated primarily in the last weeks before Lent (this year Carnival lasts until February 16th). In history, Carnival has always been a period of happiness and sometimes of excess, seen as a last opportunity to go crazy before the solemn period of Lent. Also in present times, Carnival is celebrated with much enthusiasm and energy, and many cities are famous for the costumes and masked dances. Venice, with its fantastic masks painted with meticulous detail, is the Italian city most well known for the beauty of its Carnival celebrations, but the spirit of this holiday is felt throughout Italy.
